A bit about me…
I have been a teacher of both geography and geology for over 3 decades, based in schools around my Pennine roots in the Halifax area of West Yorkshire.

As a passionate champion of earth sciences, I relish the opportunity to get students out of the classroom and engaging with the world outside their immediate local environments.

Throughout my teaching career, I have organised and led my own KS3, GCSE, and A-Level fieldwork and outdoor education trips in the UK and abroad. Leading expeditions to North Wales, Arran, Austria, Vermont and Iceland have been absolute highlights of my career.
Additionally, my work as a moderator and examiner for AQA allows me to guide students effectively, ensuring they use their real-world fieldwork experiences to maximize their success in coursework and exams.

My year-round obsession is cycling, whether I am grinding through gravel trails, road racing or mountain biking, the saddle is where I feel most at home. My ultimate cycling milestone was riding all the way from Morzine to Halifax after watching the final stage of the Tour de France.

When winter arrives, I trade two wheels for two skis. Skiing through striking mountainous landscapes under my own control is the ultimate feeling of freedom, especially in the Austrian Alps. It is a lifelong appreciation for the mountains that I have proudly passed on to countless students over the decades.
Why I love being a Teacher Tour Leader…

I have always believed that if geography is a real subject, we should be able to see it and feel it all around us. There is nothing like seeing students take complex concepts studied in a classroom and seamlessly apply them to the real world.

Iceland brings the concepts of tectonics and glaciation alive in a way that no textbook ever could. Observing the physical scale and immense timescale of these active processes up close is a transformative experience for students. This drive to bring active learning to life is why organising fieldwork, outdoor activities and ski trips has always been a cornerstone of my teaching career.

My favourite place in Iceland…

Gullfoss holds a special place in my heart. Whether it is bathed in the golden glow of the summer sun or tightly gripped by winter’s icy grasp, it is a stunning site to behold.
Watching glacial meltwater from Langjökull glacier cascade through the rugged landscape and plunge into the Hvítá River canyon at Gulfoss is a profound experience for anyone with a passion for the natural world. Iceland is the ultimate classroom without walls.

Why I love Iceland…

Exploring new landscapes, chasing new horizons, and connecting with people who appreciate our wonderfully diverse planet is what I enjoy most.
